I experimentied with  switching out my 12AX7 preamp tubes in my Fender
Deluxe for 12AT7s and also for 12AU7s in various combinations.  There is a
definate tone change which I found for the better, but I also experienced a
power loss.  If my memory serves me correct, the 12AX7 is rated 100% while
the 12AT7about 60% and the 12AU7 about 20%.  What that means is that, to my
understanding, those preamp tubes are gonna drive the power tubes by that
much less resulting in the loss of volume, albeit a more rounder "tweed"
sound.  If tone is wht u r after, I think u have to pay for it in volume.
